A Place, A Presence, A People
ChildrenWelcome!!!We love our children here at UUMC! We promise to support them by our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service.
If you have any questions about our children's program, please feel free to contact us at the church office at 344-0343.
We have a wonderful Children's Sunday School Program from 9:45 to 10:45 each Sunday morning. Our teachers are the pick of the crop, committing to team-teach for the entire school year. The classes for the 2008-2009 school year are as follows:
Nursery
Nursery Coordinator: Florence Larguier 3 & 4 Year olds
Kindergarten & 1st Graders
2nd & 3rd Graders
4th & 5th Graders
The Nursery is located on the first floor of the Trice Building in Room 105. After the Children's Sermons at both services, there are nursery workers who will guide the Pre-schoolers to the nursery if this is your wish. Please drop by the nursery and let them know or come up to the front with your child for the children's moment and let the attendants know.
Older children who are signed up for the Asbury & Wesley Singers will also leave after the Children's Sermon at the 8:30 service and be escorted to the choir rooms by the Choir Volunteers. They meet from 9:00 to 9:45 and then go directly to Sunday School. Older children not involved with the music programs will need to remain in the early service with their parents. For more information on the Music programs click HERE.
Sunday School is the core of our Children's Ministries. We use the Live B.I.G. curriculum for the 3 year olds through the 5th grade ( www.cokesbury.com ).
All of our Children's Sunday School Classes meet on the second floor of our Children's Building. The Pre-Ks have fun in Room 202. Just across the hall in Room 201 the Kindergarten & 1st Graders meet. In Room 204 the 2nd & 3rd Graders join together. The 4th & 5th Graders congregate In Room 206. The 6th Graders have moved up the stairs to the youth area, but not through those doors yet. They will meet in Room 201 on the second floor of the Holmes Building.
Other activities and programs which are geared to the children of our church include:
Acolytes - Boys and girls in the 3rd - 5th grades are invited to be trained as an Acolyte. Acolytes help during the church services by delivering the Light of God into the Sanctuary (lighting the candles), assisting with Communion and Baptisms and taking the Light of God out into the World.
Crucifer - Boys and girls in the 6th grade are invited to be trained as a Crucifer. The Crucifer carries the processional cross into the Sanctuary.
Palm Sunday - All of the children attending church that day are invited to join in the Palm procession at both Services. Children raise their palm branches in praise of Jesus Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem during the opening hymn.
Our Easter Egg Hunt - After church on Palm Sunday we hold our Annual Easter Egg Hunt. We have a wonderful time picnicing as families bring their blankets and chairs to enjoy the afternoon. Eggs are prepared ahead of time so that each child has 12 stuffed eggs with their names written on them. This has made hunting for eggs definately a more "Christian" way! Children have to look for their eggs and in doing so help their friends find theirs. Not only does the hunt last a little longer, but each child ends up with the same amount of eggs and are VERY HAPPY!!! We also have crafts for the season.
The Spring Musical - Is scheduled for the first Sunday In May each year. The three children's choirs participate in this production. It is a wonderful time for all. The kids learn so much through their experience.
Vacation Bible School - held during the summer for 3- year- olds through children finishing the 6th grade. VBS is is open to the community. We learn about God in our lives through Stories, Music, Art, Service Projects, Snacks and Activities.
The Enrichment Program - held in the afternoon during the week of VBS is for those children finishing 1st grade - 6th grade needing full day (and if there is room, other children may also sign up). During this time we work on different service projects in our community. In years past we have put together hygiene packs for the VOA Drop-in Center, painted windchimes with the members of the VOA Sheltered Workshop, we've played BINGO with Nursing Home residents and collected food for the United Methodist Mission Center.
Promotion Sunday - On the Sunday after public school classes begin, we hold Promotion Sunday for our Sunday School classes. The children, parents, and Sunday School teachers meet in the sanctuary after the early service for music while everyone gathers. Then each class' teachers are introduced and lead their group to their new classroom for refreshments and a lesson.
The Fall Festival - Held on the last Sunday evening in October, the Fall Festival is the kick-off for our Fall Service Project. Last fall we collected items to fill Flood Buckets for UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief), which was so important after the distruction from the hurricanes.
The Christmas Program - is held on the 2nd Sunday in Advent. Children in our program are invited to share their individual talents (piano, instruments, poetry, etc.) before the beginning of our Children's Choir Program. The program always looks to the coming of Christ in our lives. Afterwards there is a reception for all.
