Kids Hope USA

ONE Makes all the difference.

One child, one hour is the heart of KIDS HOPE USA. One caring adult mentoring an at-risk child one hour every week. Because when kids feel loved and valued, they are better able to learn, grow, and succeed.

But one church, one school is its brilliance.

KIDS HOPE USA develops one-on-one relationships through the creation of church-school partnerships that pair church members with deserving children in supportive, mentoring relationships.

KIDS HOPE USA mentors spend just one hour per week, reading, talking, playing and listening to a child at school. By helping the child feel loved and valued, they help that child to learn, grow and succeed.

Our Adopted School:

In 1983, UUMC officially adopted University Terrace Elementary School and has faithfully worked to build a strong partnership with our neighborhood school since then.  UT has a total population of 430 students.  This diverse student body includes children from forty different countries and approximately thirty-one different languages are spoken.  95% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch, thus meaning they live below the poverty line.

How YOU Can Get Involved:

Become a Mentor:
Mentoring a child is a wonderful way to devote an hour a week to a child who desperately wants your love and guidance. Each mentor is paired with a child at University Terrace (grades K-5) and meets with them on a weekly basis to work on academics and to have some fun together.

Become a Prayer Partner:
Faithfully commit to praying for one of our mentor/child pairs. Pray for their success and check in with them to hear joys and concerns.

Become a Garden Team Member:
Our Garden Team meets every Tuesday morning in the edible garden at UT from 8:00 – 9:30.  The team works with 5th grade garden helpers involving them in the entire gardening process, maintains the different gardens on campus, and facilitates the monthly 4H meetings.

Become a Book Club Leader:
We currently sponsor 3 book clubs: one for each 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Two adult leaders guide a small group of accelerated readers through quality literature provided by our Open Door and CCC Sunday School classes. Children  engage in discussions about character development, author’s purpose, and vocabulary usage. Each child completes 3 books which they get to keep.

Become a Special Events Helper:
Each year we sponsor several events in which extra volunteers are always needed and welcomed. We provide monthly teacher encourager gifts, teacher luncheons, a school-wide Christmas party, an annual garden party, an end of the year celebration for our Kids Hope children, and the 5th grade graduation ceremony.

Make a Donation:
Kids Hope gratefully accepts donations of school uniforms (navy pants, shorts, and skorts and burgandy polo shirts), socks, underwear, coats, gloves, belts, backpacks, school supplies, sports equipment, outdoor toys and coloring books and small toys to add to the good behavior store. As well, monetary donations are always accepted.
