Jesus said, “Let the children come to me and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14
The primary purpose of Children’s Ministries of UUMC is to nurture children and grow their faith in such a way that they become true disciples for Jesus. Our programs are designed to provide lessons and experiences that help children and their families develop personal relationships with each other and with Jesus.
The Children’s “department” serves infants thru children in 5th grade with a wide variety of weekly programs, as well as special events. Here are a few highlights of what we have to offer:
Sunday School – 9:45-10:45am
Sunday School is at the heart of our discipleship training for all ages, but especially for our children. We offer classes for 3-year olds through 5th grade, with the children divided according to their age and/or grade:
Preschool (3’s & 4’s) – Children’s Building, Room 102
Kindergarten & 1st Grade – Children’s Building, Room 206
2nd & 3rd Grade – Children’s Building, Room 204
4th & 5th Grade – Children’s Building, Room 202
Our 2nd and 3rd Graders are presented Bibles on Promotion Sunday (in August) and have special curriculum designed to help them learn how to use their new Bibles.
All of the other children’s classes use Methodist-based curriculum called “Deep Blue,” which helps us dive deep into God’s Word and learn how to live as disciples of Jesus.
Our Church Nursery is open for children 5 and under every “regular” Sunday morning from 8:15 until 12:15, as well as for Special Worship Services. We also offer childcare (infants thru 5th grade) for Weekday Bible Studies and Church Meetings upon request. Please check with the Class Leader or Committee Chair to arrange for a Nursery.
Our Nursery Staff consists of young adults and college students, all with childcare experience and current CPR and First Aid certification. Our Staff is very dedicated, which gives you and your child a consistency that we feel helps (especially during that “clingy” stage). You KNOW who will be watching your child each week, which allows actual relationships to be formed between the Nursery Staff and you and your child.
All 3rd thru 5th graders are invited to join us for Faith Friends on Sunday afternoons, from 4:30-6:00pm. Our time is spent playing and laughing and learning. Together, we hope to discover what God is wanting from and for each of us! Come! Bring your friends! It’s never too late to join! We can never have too many Faith Friends!
Cradle Roll Ministry
Our Cradle Roll Ministry is for all parents-to-be and new parents. Babies are a sign of hope and growth for our church. Together, our Ministry Team seeks to show and share God’s love with these young families. We keep in touch with the expectant parents through calls, emails and cards, checking in to let them know we are praying for them and to see if there is anything we, as the church, can do for them. Once the baby is born, we celebrate with the family by providing meals and a small gift from the church.
If you are expecting or know a church member or prospective member who is, please let us know so we can begin to shower you with God’s love. Your baby is a part of our UUMC family even now and we want to celebrate with you as we welcome your little lamb into the church family.
Mommy & Me Playgroup
This is a new group that is forming in order to reach out to parents of young children (infants and toddlers). The idea is to gather the parents and babies on a regular basis to share the joys and struggles of parenthood, to share resources (pediatricians, babysitter lists, sleep tricks, etc.) and become a peer support group for each other. And, of course, this will allow our babies and toddlers to play together and start to develop their own little church friends.
Our Children’s Choirs meet on Sunday mornings, from 9:00-9:45, and are open to all children in Pre-K (4-ys old) thru 6th grade. The children are divided into two groups: Asbury Choir (4 year olds thru 2nd grade) and Wesley Choir (3rd-6th grade). In addition to Christmas and Spring musicals, the children sing during our Worship Services several times throughout the school year.
Special Events: Details for these and other activities/programs for Children will be promoted through the Church Bulletin and through our Church Newsletter, “Gathering & Scattering.”
Vacation Bible School – for 3-year olds thru 5th graders
Our VBS is a week-long morning program typically held the 2nd full week of June. We meet from 9:00am-12noon for Bible Stories, Crafts, Music, Science, Missions and Drama. Registration will begin in the Spring for this year’s “Hero Central, Discover Your Strength in God!” on June 12-16, 2017.
Harvest Fest – for children of All ages
Our Harvest Festival is a celebration of the Fall season and is a fun, safe alternative to Halloween. Activities include tons of games (with prizes), Inflatables, a Cupcake Walk, a Chili Cook-off, Hot Dogs and Hamburgers and Trunk-or-Treat. Entertainment is provided by our Youth Praise Band, as well as lots of goofy adults and teens. This event is FREE and open to the public and is generally held on a Sunday evening mid to late October.
Church-wide Caroling – intergenerational
We gather as a church family to spread Christmas cheer and Joyful Noise to some of our homebound members and their neighborhoods. It is always amazing what a simple off-key verse of “Jingle Bells” can do for someone who can’t get out anymore. This activity is usually scheduled just after the end of the school semester.
Palm Sunday Processional – for Toddlers thru 5th Graders
All children are invited to help lead worship on Palm Sunday in a procession of palms at both morning worship services; the children remind us all of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem as we enter into Holy Week.
Easter Egg Hunt – for families of all shapes and sizes
The entire church family is invited to join us for a fun and joy-filled afternoon at the home of one of our founding church members. Feel free to invite your friends and neighbors for a EGG-stravagant picnic, an EGG-normous Egg Hunt and a special visit from the Easter Bunny! This event is typically held directly after the 11:00 Worship Service on Palm Sunday.
